Overview

A pelvic sonogram (pelvic ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize organs in the pelvic region, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and prostate. It helps diagnose conditions such as cysts, fibroids, infections, and reproductive health issues.

Procedure Breakdown:

  1. Preparation:
    • For an abdominal ultrasound, patients may need to drink water beforehand to fill the bladder for better imaging.
    • For a transvaginal ultrasound, patients may be asked to empty their bladder before the procedure.
  2. Gel Application (for abdominal ultrasound):
    • A water-based gel is applied to the lower abdomen to help transmit sound waves.
  3. Ultrasound Imaging:
    • Abdominal Ultrasound: A handheld transducer is moved over the abdomen to capture images.
    • Transvaginal Ultrasound: A thin, lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina for a closer view of reproductive organs.
  4. Evaluation:
    • The ultrasound provides real-time images of the pelvic organs, identifying abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, or pregnancy-related concerns.
    • Doppler imaging may be used to assess blood flow in pelvic vessels.
  5. Completion & Results:
    • The gel is wiped off, and the procedure is completed within 15–45 minutes.
    • A radiologist reviews the images, and results are sent to the patient’s doctor for further evaluation.
